Two things shape almost every drain we clear on this ridge: old pipes and big trees. Together they cause most of the local trouble underground.

Much of the housing dates to the Federation and Californian Bungalow waves, with newer apartment blocks going up near the railway and the highway. A good share of those older homes still run the original earthenware clay drainage laid before the war.

That clay was never built for a mature liquidambar overhead. Decade by decade the joints craze open, and roots follow the damp along a cracked joint until the pipe chokes shut.

Roots top the list here. Between the towering street trees and the deep private gardens, a root-choked drain is far and away the job we are called out to most, especially under the older avenues.

The grand plantings along Springdale Road and Stanhope Road are part of what makes this place, and they are exactly what feeds the problem below ground. A wider canopy simply means more roots hunting moisture in your sewer.

Then the ground itself pitches in. The suburb rides a ridge that drops away east into the Lane Cove bushland, so runoff has one way to travel, and it is down.

Big Sydney downpours wash leaf and grit into the older stormwater pits on the lower blocks, and the pits nearest the bottom of the slope cop the worst of it. Gravity does half the work of a blockage before a single leaf lands.

Beside the station and the Marian Street shops you get a footbridge and a village either side of the line, older houses and newer units all feeding ageing pipework. We know which streets run clay and which run modern PVC, because these are the drains we clear week in, week out.
